Kendrick Lamar Brings Religious Themes to Hip-Hop Music

Kendrick Lamar’s hip-hop music may sound secular at first, with profanity tucked into his rap songs, but the lyrics actually describe the redeeming love of Christ. Buzzfeed reports that Lamar’s music seems to fall somewhere between Christian and secular, and the artist himself is a professed Christian.

Lamar was brought up in a gang culture, and says his grandmother introduced him to the Bible. He was baptised in 2013, after his Grammy-nominated album Good Kid, m.A.A.d City went platinum.

Lamar told Complex last year that his work is for God.

“I got a greater purpose. God put something in my heart to get across and that’s what I’m going to focus on, using my voice as an instrument and doing what needs to be done,” he said.

According to Buzzfeed, Lamar is not a smoker and drinks rarely unlike many other rap artists. He has been in a relationship with one woman since before he became fame and openly talks about his faith. Still, some Christians doubt that Lamar is a real believer.

Chad Horton, co-owner of Christian hip-hop blog Rapzilla said, “Some Christians might hear Kendrick rapping about God or Jesus and still reject it, because even though he says he’s Christian, they listen to his other songs and look at his lifestyle and might not feel like they reflect what a Christian is.”

The rapper is not the only Christian in the hip-hop industry and has befriended critically acclaimed Christian rapper Lecrae.

Lecrae said that he can turn to Lamar to help him cope with deeper issues.

“In this industry, a lot of people shake hands and high-five each other, but there’s not a lot of genuine conversation about the deeper things in life. When you’re struggling with your girl or your mom is sick, it’s rare that you find someone that actually wants to talk with you on a real level. So being able to connect with him on spiritual matters is definitely something that I value and appreciate,” he said.

Malayan Tiger: in the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula

Perhaps 500 Malayan tigers live in the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula (Malaysia and Thailand), but their tropical rain forest habitat is dwindling. As trees fall for farms and other development these tigers increasingly come into conflicts with people—such as when they prey on livestock—and often pay with their lives.

Tigers are sparsely scattered on the Malay Peninsula, occurring where small pockets of forest or vegetation are isolated enough to hold them and can provide enough prey to nourish them. It’s estimated that only one or two Malayan tigers can live in a 39-square-mile territory here, because deer, boar, and other tiger food is thin on the ground. But these cats do have some humans on their side. The Global Tiger Initiative has commended the Malaysian government for its plan to connect tiger populations with wildlife corridors, making breeding more viable, and to double the numbers of its national animal by 2022.

Only in 2004 did genetic studies establish Panthera tigris jacksoni as a subspecies separate from their Indochinese tiger relatives on the Asian mainland. To the naked eye the coloration, patterns, skull shapes, and other physical characteristics between these two subspecies are nearly identical.

Scientists estimate only about 3,000 wild tigers are left in the entire world. Meet the subspecies and see what threats each is facing.

Sumatran Tiger[/highlight], More than a thousand tigers prowled the Indonesian island of Sumatra when the animals were surveyed in 1978. Today, fewer than half that number survive here and those cats are under siege by poachers and ceaseless deforestation of their home forests fueled by the pulp, paper, and palm oil industries.

A 2004 report from TRAFFIC, the IUCN/WWF effort to track the illegal wildlife trade, suggested that poachers were killing at least 40 of the critically endangered animals every year.

The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is the last of the “island tiger” subspecies. The neighboring Indonesian islands of Java and Bali were once home to their own distinct tigers, but the Bali tiger (Panthera tigris balica) and the Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) each died out during the 20th century. Conservationists are working hard to help their Sumatran relatives avoid the same fate.

A 2004 report from TRAFFIC, the IUCN/WWF effort to track the illegal wildlife trade, suggested that poachers were killing at least 40 of the critically endangered animals every year.

South China Tiger

Time may have already run out for the South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis), which hasn’t been documented in the wild since the early 1970s. While a few individuals may still survive, the subspecies is possibly extinct in the wild—though in the 1950s its population was estimated at a (possibly quite inflated) 4,000 individuals, which would have been more than all the wild tigers living today.

South China tigers were victims of eradication campaigns during China’s Great Leap Forward era of the 1950s and 1960s. Protection came in 1979, when hunting was banned, and China instituted more active conservation measures in the 1990s, but by that time populations had fallen irrecoverably.

Some conservationists maintain that not enough protected, undisturbed land remains in the region to house a viable breeding population. Not everyone agrees. A group called Save China’s Tigers, working with state forestry authorities, has launched a controversial “rewilding” project in which cats from the subspecies’ tiny captive population are transported to a South African reserve where they can breed and learn to survive for possible reintroduction in China. Though many conservationists take a dim view of the prospect, as of 2012 a dozen cubs had been bred and the effort was still moving forward.

Nintendo Loses UK Motion Control Patent Ruling To Electronics Giant Philips

A United Kingdom court today ruled in favor of electronics giant Philips in its ongoing case against Nintendo, stating that the company infringed on two Philips patents related to motion controls. Nintendo did not violate a third patent related to “modeling a body in a virtual environment,” UK High Court Judge Colin Birss said in court today, as reported by Bloomberg.

It’s not immediately clear what penalty Nintendo faces as a result, but Birss said he would provide an update on the damages to be paid to Philips sometime in July. Whatever the case, a Nintendo representative said the company plans to appeal the decision.

“Nintendo has a long history of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others,” the company said. “Nintendo is committed to ensuring that this judgment does not affect continued sales of its highly acclaimed line of video game hardware, software, and accessories and will actively pursue all such legitimate steps as are necessary to avoid any interruptions to its business.”

Philips is also suing Nintendo in the United States, claiming that Nintendo copied two of its technology patents. The first is related to real-life actions inside a game and the second revolves around an input system featuring a pointing device. In this case, Philips is asking for a block on all sales of the Wii U, as well as damages.

This is the second major patent lawsuit Nintendo has lost in as many years. Last year, a jury ruled that Nintendo’s 3DS violated patents held by former Sony inventor Seijiro Tomita. He was initially awarded $30.2 million in damages, but this figure was later halved.

    The Crew Review

The Crew tries to be a driving game with something for everyone. You can team up with a group of friends for an epic road trip filled with fast-paced illegal activities, and seamlessly explore a massive map of the U.S., from the tip of Maine, all the way down to Miami, over to Los Angeles and back again, passing through other iconic cities along the way. Though it’s true that all of this is possible, the experience isn’t all that it’s made out to be. The Crew tries to do a lot, and while it technically delivers the features it promises, it frequently stumbles over itself. There are brief moments of joy within, but just when you start to think the game’s turned a corner, a bump in the road sends your joyride careening off course. When the best thing a racing game has going for it is the variety of environments it has to offer, you know something’s amiss.

You start off in the streets of Detroit, but it’s not long before you’re rolling through mountains, everglades, and forests. The huge maps and its colossal number of activities is intimidating at first, but that’s great: the more places to go and things to do, the merrier. Story missions, which take you through a trope-filled campaign that plays out like a Fast & Furious sequel, send you from one region of the country to the next, and missions emerge out of the blue along the way. You street race, smuggle contraband, take down competing criminals, and tackle bite-sized emergent challenges that test your abilities behind the wheel while you’re on the go. There are hundreds of things to do, but only some are truly fun. The problem? With so much ground to cover, The Crew feels and looks like it’s stretched too thin, and it’s evident from the start. The Crew’s world may be massive and varied, but it’s not good-looking. It’s constantly plagued by texture and geometry pop-in, and looks generally outdated. People, buildings, the environment, and most importantly, the cars, are represented by disappointing models that suffer from an unsightly amount of aliasing.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be Published by Microsoft

A Microsoft executive has confirmed that the corporation will act as publisher for Square Enix’s Rise of the Tomb Raider for Xbox One.

Aaron Greenberg, a marketing manager for Xbox, revealed the deal when responding to a fan on Twitter.

The newest revelation sheds light on the finer details of The Rise of the Tomb Raider’s timed exclusivity deal for Xbox One, but also poses questions about how future ports to other systems will be handled.

Microsoft’s agreement to act as publisher likely means it will handle marketing and distribution costs; which possibly could be a responsibility it has taken to help broker the exclusivity deal in the first place.

The deal also suggests how deep the agreement between the two companies has become, as well as how much of the publishing costs Microsoft is willing to shoulder in order to seal an exclusivity agreement. That also, in turn, suggests how far into the future the exclusivity period could last.

Currently, both Microsoft and Square Enix are only saying The Rise of the Tomb Raider is a “holiday 2015″ exclusive.

A representative for Square Enix has told GameSpot that Microsoft is providing support across the entire development and publishing pipeline for Rise of the Tomb Raider. The publisher has not yet commented on whether this affects plans for a PlayStation 4 version.

“Yes, Microsoft will be publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox,” Square Enix’s statement read.

“Microsoft has always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and they will get behind this game with more support across development, marketing and retail than ever before, which we believe will be a step in continuing to build the Tomb Raider franchise as one of the biggest in gaming.”

Microsoft turned heads in August when it revealed that Lara Croft’s latest adventure would only be available on Xbox One for a limited time.

In December, Sony revealed it had a major third-party exclusive of its own with Street Fighter V, which will be a PS4 and PC exclusive.
